Category: Events

Tuesday, February 21st, 2023 | 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM

1.0 Hour of CLE In-Person Only at the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association | 1375 East 9th Street, Floor #2 Cleveland, OH 44114

Here's why you should not miss this program:

The maternal and fetal health disparities in Cleveland are ever-present but are especially troubling for black expectant mothers who are disproportionately impacted by pregnancy-related loss. The Ohio Department of Health recently reported that black expectant mothers face two to three times the risk for maternal mortality. This program will feature a screening of the film, Toxic | A Black Woman's Story, which is based on the true story of “Nina”, a local black female attorney in the second trimester of her pregnancy.  The film depicts the cumulative effects of the chronic stresses Nina experiences as a normal part of her daily routine and the unfortunate effects these external forces have on her pregnancy.

After the viewing, our esteemed panel will lead a discussion on the issues highlighted in this important film, including the inequities black women face in health care, the causation of how these inequities, along with other toxic societal and economic pressures, are causing the deplorable infant mortality rates locally for black mothers, and the examination of potential legal and legislative remedies to address this pivotal issue.
